Universiteit Hasselt - Knowledge in action

Would you like to bid farewell to the Hasselt University lecture halls for a while and gain some international experience? Hasselt University offers you the opportunity to go abroad during your studies to follow programme components at a partner institution

General principles:

  • you will go to a partner university, meaning one with which Hasselt University or your faculty has concluded a cooperation agreement;
  • the study period abroad is integrated in your programme, and therefore (in principle) not an extension of your studies;
  • you will receive academic recognition for the period you study abroad for your Hasselt University degree. You will be required to draw up a study programme in advance which you will follow at the host institution, to be presented to your faculty for approval prior to departure;
  • each programme determines by itself at which level (bachelor - master - PhD) a stay abroad is possible and during which period. Find out about the requirements with the internationalisation coordinator of your faculty/programme;
  • you have enrolled for a degree contract at Hasselt university, meaning for a study programme which leads to a degree. This ensures you are exempted from paying the enrolment fees at the host institution;
  • you will receive organisational and administrative support from Hasselt University and from your host institution.

You can apply through your student file (exchange section), where you can also consult destinations that are available for your programme. The deadline for application is 20 February.

There are various scholarships with which you can (partially) finance your stay abroad.

Erasmus is part of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission. One of the main objectives of Erasmus is to stimulate the mobility of students and teachers within higher education between participating countries.

The European Commission granted the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education to both Hasselt University and tUL for the complete Erasmus+ programme period 2014 - 2020. The Charter and the Erasmus Policy Statement can be consulted here:

All faculties of Hasselt University offer their students the opportunity to go on an Erasmus exchange for a study and / or internship stay abroad. This involves staying for a minimum of three (study) months and a maximum of one complete academic year in one of the participating countries (28 EU member states + Norway, Lichtenstein, Iceland, Turkey and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)). For more information about the possibilities within your programme, please contact the  internationalisation coordinator of your programme.

The internationalisation coordinator of your programme is - in consultation with the programmes -  in charge of the selection of the candidates and will rank the selected candidates. This ranking determines the order in which the Erasmus scholarships are awarded.

More information about Erasmus+ and Erasmus is available on the website of the European Commission. Do you still have questions? Please contact the international office.

Erasmus Belgica is a partnership between the Flemish Community, the French Community and the German-speaking Community aimed at improving the mobility of students and teachers in higher education between the Communities of Belgium. The initiative was founded with assistance from the Prince Philippe foundation.

An international experience is often a fundamental requirement of employers for candidates for a job. Due to its special structure, Belgium offers students the unique advantage of being able to gain "international" experience within the borders of the country. The participating universities and university colleges are required to conclude an agreement with the partners of the other Communities.

The goal is to provide students the opportunity to spend part of their programme at a university or university college in another Community. This gives them a chance to integrate into the language and culture of another Community of Belgium and to adapt to different surroundings and a different mentality.

Generally speaking, the programme is conducted similarly to the European Erasmus programme. For more information regarding the conditions, nomination process, manuals, etc., please visit the Erasmus page.
