In the new education and research positioning of Hasselt University, the international component plays an obvious and natural role: Hasselt University aims to be a creative hub in an international knowledge and innovation web for its students, researchers and other stakeholders. Hasselt University is innovative, result-oriented, open, social and international but at the same time has a regional base. In the context of this positioning, the internationalisation policy has been defined with the strategic goals mentioned below:
SG1 Stimulation and facilitation of mobility for students, researchers and lecturers
Professional support of the mobility of students, researchers and lecturers forms the basis for the further development of internationalisation at Hasselt University. We must strive for a healthy balance between inflow and outflow while not losing sight of the 20-20-target. As well as encouraging students to take a semester abroad, Hasselt University is also striving to enhance the choice of summer schools and embed these in all programmes.
SG2 Strengthening the international dimension of the curriculum and the campus
Hasselt University strives to offer attractive programmes with quality content, a current educational concept and an international dimension. In addition, Hasselt University wishes to develop an international campus.
SG3 Strengthening the range of international master's programmes, in line with Hasselt University's strategic choices
SG4 Strengthening international partnerships and networks
With its educational and research activities, Hasselt University wishes to participate in international networks in order to strengthen its role as a creative hub in the international knowledge and innovation web.
SG5 Supporting activities relating to development cooperation in the North
Based on the idea of “science sharing”, Hasselt University is active in the field of university development cooperation. Hasselt University wishes to give its students and lecturers the possibility to gain mobility experience in the South, as well as attract students and lecturers from the South to come to Hasselt University to study, work towards a PhD or to teach.
SG6 Supporting projects aimed at building capacity in the South
Hasselt University wishes to actively participate in the search for sustainable answers to social challenges in developing countries. This is why Hasselt University encourages and facilitates participation in development cooperation programmes which aim to enhance capacity in terms of education, research and community services in the South. When projects are set up, priority is given to the 20 VLIR-UOS partner countries, as cooperation with a specific number of partner countries makes it possible to understand the specific needs and wants of each country better, increasing the impact of activities. Both respect for each other's culture and the concept of 'brain circulation' are central to all such projects.
