General research domains

The fundamental research performed at BIOMED can be divided in two main research domains. Autoimmunity and Neuroinflammation are subject of the first research domain. We focus on ongoing disease processes in multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as well as on other neurodegenerative disorders such as epilepsy. In addition, the identification of disease markers to develop new therapeutic and diagnostic strategies are important topics of interest.
The second research domain comprises the development of biosensors to detect disease related markers. This research domain is performed in cooperation with the institute of Materials Research (IMO) of Hasselt University.

Within both research domains four strategic research programs are distinguished.
