Exchange programmes
General conditions for Admission
The following are the general conditions for admission as an exchange student:
- A formal agreement for student exchanges for the relevant academic year has been established between the home university and Hasselt University.
- The student is officially enrolled for a degree programme at the home university.
- The student has obtained a minimum of 60 ECTS credits at the home university. A transcript of records will have to be submitted in the application form as proof. (First year students are not eligible for participation in exchange programmes.)
- The home university confirms the student's status as an exchange student, i.e. it is confirmed that one of the agreed exchange places at Hasselt University has been assigned to the student.
It is not required that a LLP/ERASMUSstudent holds an ERASMUS grant to get admitted to the LLP/ERASMUS programme. - The student undertakes to follow courses and sit exams for a study programme of minimum 18 ECTS credits per semester.
- This study programme (at least partially) leads to credit transfer or to some other form of academic recognition by the home university.
- The student meets the following linguistic requirements.
For lecture programmes taught in Dutch an intermediate level in Dutch is indispensable.
For courses taught in English the student should have a sound grammatical basis, the pronunciation skills and vocabulary range to take part in social intercourse on a number of topics, and the competence to understand native speakers of English and to comprehend information provided in newspapers, magazines and textbooks. In other words the student should have the level of proficiency required for the Cambridge First Certificate (equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550) .
It is considered the responsibility of the home university to select students who meet this linguistic requirements. - The student undertakes to stay at UHassselt for at least 1 complete teaching period as applicable to the programme in which he/she is following courses (i.e. for a complete semester or trimester, respectively).
- A duly completed and signed copy of the application form is submitted by the deadline indicated.
Students who meet these criteria are admitted to bachelor courses and to the courses for Erasmus exchange students.
Exchange students seeking admission to master courses or programmes or subjects taken from such programmes must meet additional admission criteria.
- - at least 100 ECTS-credits for 1 master course
- at least 120 ECTS-credits for 2 master courses
- at least 150 ECTS-credits for 3 master courses
- at least 180 ECTS-credits for the master programme - the prerequisites for the course(s) chosen;
- proficiency in English (equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550).
The requirements 1 and 2 will have to be proven on the basis of a transcript of records which needs to be submitted together with the application form. The prerequisites for each course can be found in the electronic course descriptions (see English webpages of the study guide). Proving proficiency in English does not require that the TOEFL test is actually taken.
Exchange periods and dates of term
Exchange students may come to UHasselt for one of the following periods:
- The full academic year (19 September 2011 to 6 July 2012).
- The first semester (19 September 2011 to 4 February 2012).

The duration of stay may differ from one partneruniversity to another with a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months.
The first step in application
The first step in the application procedure is that the student exchange coordinator at the home university informs the International Office (erika.vandersmissen@uhasselt.be) at UHasselt of the assignment of exchange places for the next academic year or semester.
Students concerned will then receive by e-mail a copy of the application form and some further instructions. On request, these documents may also be sent to the student's home address or to the student exchange coordinator at the home university.
The application has to be done online using the application form.
Deadlines
Duly completed and signed application forms should be submitted to the International Office (erika.vandersmissen@uhasselt.be) at the following dates at the latest:
- 1 August 2011 for study periods starting in the first semester or trimester.
- 1 December 2011 for other periods.
Confirmation of Receipt
On reception of the application form, the Faculty Erasmus Coordinator will send to the student's home address a confirmation of receipt, including comments and suggestions on the choice of subjects wherever applicable.
Formal Registration
Formal registration, including the final choice of a study programme, will be arranged on arrival, i.e. during the Orientation Programme.
Tuition fee
Exchange students are exempted from paying tuition fees. Soon after registration exchange students will receive a student ID card which entitles them to all facilities, reductions, etc. available to UHasselt students.
