Doctoral (PhD) grants for strategic basic research

Challenging and innovative research (at PhD level), which, if successful, may in the long term lead to innovative applications (products, processes, services) with economic added value for specific companies, a collective of companies, or a sector, or in line with the VRWI transition areas.

Baekeland mandates

Baekeland mandates are projects that are assigned to a ‘consortium’ of a Flemish company and a Flemish university. Baekeland mandates focus on doctoral research that, in case of success, has clear economic objectives and offers added value to the company involved in the project.

Innovation mandates

Innovation mandates provide support to postdoctoral researchers who wish to deploy active efforts to achieve the effective transfer, the exploitation and the utilisation of their research findings, either through a collaboration with an existing company, or a new spin-off company to be established.

In the past, these grants were managed by the IWT (Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology). Over the last year the landscape for Flemish research funding has been restructured.  The IWT and Enterprise Flanders merged into one new agency: Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO).  The activities of IWT towards companies are implemented within this new agency. The activities of the former IWT towards universities are integrated within the FWO.  This implies that the management of the Baekeland and the innovation mandates is part of the activities of VLAIO, while the management of the doctoral (PhD) grants strategic basic research is transferred to FWO.

The modalities and the application procedure for the Baekeland and the Innovation mandates remain unchanged. Due to the transfer to the FWO, however, several changes have been made to the modalities and the application procedure of the doctoral (PhD) grants strategic basic research e.g.:

- Candidates must submit and defend their applications in English (an international expert panel will be part of the evaluation process)
- Applications must be submitted via the online tool at the e-portal of FWO
- A new scoring and selection system will be implemented
- …

Because of these important changes, the information session is highly recommended to anyone who wants to apply for one of these grants or who wants to encourage his/her students to apply. Since for the Baekeland and the Innovation mandates close cooperation with companies is essential, we kindly ask you to distribute this invitation to your business contacts.
