The word university has been derived from the Latin expression universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which means ‘the community of teachers and academics’. But often, this universitas also refers to the universal mentality that should characterize an academic: open-minded, not afraid to start a dialogue or even a controversy, be prepared or even feel the urge to consult with colleagues of other universities and research institutes to optimize the own knowledge.
Striving for a strong international orientation, both in the field of education and research, is one of UHasselt’s policy objectives. More specifically in the PhD field, Hasselt University stimulates PhDs and their supervisors to collaborate with other universities in Belgium and abroad, if this could contribute to the quality of the PhD.
