INTEGRATION AND SOCIAL COHESION (PHD)

In this doctoral thesis the central research question is: What impact do social-cultural factors have on ethnic minority group members’ attitudes towards society. The general research question will be divided into three subsidiary questions: 1) What is the impact of social-cultural integration on minority group members’ perception of the majority group? 2) What is the impact of social-cultural integration on minority group members’ trust in the authorities (politics and police)? 3) What is the impact of social-cultural integration on minority group members’ sense of identity? The purpose is to use data collected from respondents of Turkish and Moroccan descent in order to explore whether and how subdimensions of social-cultural integration influence aspects of social cohesion. The data were gathered by conducting face-to-face interviews in Flemish communes and cities (in 2006 and 2008).
