Translating diversity
This study investigates organizational actors’ translation of the new managerial concept of diversity in their organization. Based a qualitative case study of an automobile company, we analyze how individuals’ specific embeddedness enables and constrains distinct bricolages of institutional logics to translate diversity. Our case indicates that their embeddedness is constituted by their position in the organization in terms of rank and profession, which gives them access to partially different sets of institutional logics. As institutional ‘bricoleurs’, they translate diversity by drawing on institutional logics available to them in ways that are functional to their specific practical goals. The study generates new insights for neo-institutional and translation theory and advances new directions for diversity research and diversity management.
