Training Road Safety - UHasselt

Training Road Safety

Road Safety in Asian & Latin American Countries: Principles and Approaches (9 - 21 October 2011)

In October 2011, the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB) of Hasselt University organised its road safety training programme once again. This 4rd edition was entitled "Road Safety in Asian & Latin American Countries: Principles and Approaches". It was co-funded by the VLIR-UOS (Flemish InterUniversity Board - University Development Cooperation).

Content

The programme of short training courses was built up in different steps which are important for improving road safety:

1) analysis of situations for a better diagnosis of the situation

  • general introduction
  • sketch of the situation
  • data registration: conflict observation technique, theory and practice, with visual materials

2) measures and strategies to improve road safety

  • education and sensitization
  • maintaining and planning public space
3) (Group) assignment
  • How to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in practice.

Aims

During this training programme the participants got acquainted with ideas, techniques and solutions which will be a surplus value for there career. The participants were taught how to measure and assess road (un)safety and road situations in their own country. Moreover, they were supplied with possible solutions, specifically adapted to the needs of their country. This group of people was able to apply the acquired knowledge and competences in their own job straight away.

Getting acquainted with experiences from similar countries and good examples from Europe is undoubtedly a benefit of this course. This way, they can determine more efficiently what measures can be effective for their own country.

VLIR-UOS funded a total of 15 scholarships, which enabled 15 participants to take part in the course for free. Only participants from countries on the VLIR-UOS country list could be considered for a scholarship. The following countries were on the VLIR-UOS country list

  • Asia (8 countries):  Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Palestinian, Vietnam
  • Latin America (11 countries): Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru, Surinam

Note: there will be no road safety training in 2012. As yet, it is not known whether this course will be organised in 2013. Keep checking this page regularly for updates. When a new road safety course is planned, it will be announced here first.
