Structure research UHasselt

From its foundation, the academic structure of Hasselt University and the transnational University Limburg has been built up as a matrix structure that manages education and research in an integrated way. At the highest level, there are the faculties that manage the faculty policy concerning academic education and research.

Within the faculties, we have the different so-called capacity groups. These are formal academic organs that group all the staff members that teach and carry out research within the same discipline. The assignment of academic tasks also takes places at this level.

Furthermore, each department consists of one or more research groups. They are the basic units for research organisation.

Finally, this classic tree diagram of research groups, capacity groups and faculties also includes research institutes. They group researchers that carry out the whole range of research in a number of spearhead fields, from fundamental research to applied research and concrete valorisation applications.

Besides the research groups and research institutes UHasselt also has thematic research clusters. These are academic organization units. They group researchers who perform multi disciplinary research in certain thematic fields. These organization units do not necessary cover the whole range of fundamental to applied research. Thematic research clusters do not necessary acquire financial resources from all four money flows but they have the ambition to grow financially and concerning critical mass.
