Young Legal Researchers Conference 2023

The aim of this conference is to bring together young researchers (primarily PhD researchers and postdocs) to share, discuss and exchange ideas on their research with one another. The 4^th Young Legal Researchers Conference will take place on Friday the 1^st of December 2023 in Hasselt, Belgium under the theme of ‘The role of law in shaping resilient and sustainable societies’.

The conference will be hosted by young academics of the faculty of law at the University of Hasselt.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Hasselt University Faculty of Law is pleased to announce the fourth edition of the Young Legal Researchers Conference, which will take place on Friday the 1st of December 2023. The conference will be organised physically at the University of Hasselt (city campus). The aim of the conference is to bring together young researchers (primarily PhD and postdoctoral researchers) to share, discuss and exchange ideas on their research with one another.

Contemporary challenges facing society today require creative solutions: the COVID-19 pandemic; the war in Ukraine and ongoing developments in migration, climate change and emerging technology are all examples of issues which emphasise the need for law to keep pace with the changing state of the world. This conference is interested in exploring potential solutions to these issues through the lenses of sustainability and resilience, as these concepts may be applied across a broad cross-section of the law.

We invite researchers to submit an abstract from all areas of law to present their findings, critiques, ideas and solutions related to the following theme: the role of law in shaping resilient and sustainable societies.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

Resilience:

1. The resilience of Law as a tool to govern a changing society: law vs. ethics, law vs. economics, law vs. technology; extra-legal approaches.
2. The resilience of legal procedures: legislative procedures, judicial procedures, administrative procedures, procedural justice.
3. Resilience in the content of the law: legal responses to societal, economic and technological changes; open norms vs. detailed regulation; law in the face of crises; resilience in sectoral legislation.
4. Promoting (individual) rights and resilience through law: social justice; corporate social responsibility; individual vs. collective rights.

Sustainability:

1. Achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals: evaluating progress; circular economy; green economy; low-carbon emissions; legal vs. extra-legal approaches; AI for sustainable development.
2. Towards sustainable outcomes - a proactive vs. reactive approach: litigation vs. regulation; procedural and substantive approaches; a sustainable approach to sectoral issues.
3. Sustainability as a multi-level issue: fragmentation; international-law; role of domestic/multilateral/international legal bodies; effectiveness; comparative approaches; best practices.
4. Sustainable Economic Activities: business and the environment; law and economics approach; sustainable finance and investment; cost-effectiveness; taxation; the ‘gig economy.’

All topics that lie within the overarching theme will be considered, regardless of the field of law. Participants are welcome to submit topics outside the examples listed.

Young researchers are invited to submit an abstract in English starting from 19th of June 2023 until September 24th 2023:

• The abstract (max. 400 words, excluding title) should contain the aim of the presentation, the main points of the argument and a brief conclusion. Please include also a short biography of the researcher (max. 150 words);
• Acceptance of the abstract will be communicated at the latest in the week of October 9th 2023;
• Abstracts should be uploaded through the registration form, which can be found on the website https://www.uhasselt.be/ylrc
• Participation in the conference is free, but registration is necessary. Registration will open on the 9th of October and close on the 13th of November. It will of course be possible to register to attend without presenting.

CALL FOR POSTERS

Would you like to present your legal research in a different way than by means of a powerpoint presentation or a paper...? Translate your research into a poster!

What? 

Each poster submitted will be presented during the YLRC. Each participant will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite poster. At the end of the conference day, the winner of the poster contest will be announced. The Winner will earn eternal YLRC fame!

Why? 

Because posters are not limited to graphics. You can tell much more than that with them! Legal research can also be captured in a graphically attractive way. However, the use of posters is not yet an established way of presenting and sharing research within legal studies. The YLRC team wants to change this. In our opinion, the creative and simplified presentation of (y)our research holds great potential, and is a worthwhile skill to develop.

Who can participate, and how?

Any legal researcher, who would like to showcase their legal research in a simple and attractive way, can submit a poster. Each designer is automatically admitted as a participant of the YLRC on 1st of December 2023 and can attend the conference.

Please submit your poster before 17th of November 2023 in A1 format (as a PDF) through the Google Registrations form, found on https://www.uhasselt.be/ylrc. In the registration form, you will be asked to add a short description of yourself, your research and the content of the poster. This description will serve to support the poster and will be displayed on the website. After all, not only making posters but also reading and interpreting them takes some practice.

The conference will take place at campus Hasselt of the Hasselt University. The university is located close to the city center of Hasselt and only a 15-minute walk from the train station, from where you have direct connections to Brussels-Airport and also the main train stations such as Antwerpen-Centraal and Brussel-Centraal. Getting to Hasselt

Taking the train or bus instead of the plane: it does make a big difference.  The new UHasselt policy (as of May 1) calls for taking the train for destinations that can be reached in 8h by train.
