INTRODUCTION

We are increasingly conscious of the fact that we
are living in a ‘globalised world’. A world where different players
are
interdependent and small actions can have far-reaching results.
Despite this trend and understanding, the gap
between North and South, rich and poor, the centre and the periphery,
continues to widen.
‘Development’ is considered a complex and multifarious issue which
stands in need of an inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural
approach.
This inter-faculty course seeks to provide a rigorous
interdisciplinary theoretical and applied education in sustainable
development. Its aim is to encourage in-depth scientific debates on
cultures, their knowledge systems and various ethical
orientations.
This year’s focus will be on different pro- & re- active approaches
in North and South.
The Interdisciplinary Course North-South, 1955, is joint-funded with
the VLIR-UOS (Flemish Interuniversity Council - University
Development Cooperation).
The lectures are open to all people interested.
