Organic and Polymer Chemistry
Expertises of the researchteam :
The theme of the research group Organic and Polymeric Chemistry is situated around synthesis and characterisation of functional polymers and polymer networks. The main know-how concerns the development of new and improved synthesis routes for high molecular weight processable conjugated polymers and the development and application of modern NMR-analytical tools.
Projects concerning functional polymers deal with the synthesis of new polymer materials with electrical conductive and/or special optical properties,more specific conjugated polymers with small energy band gap and active materials for polymeric LED’s, plastic electronics and biosensors. Besides the study of novel synthetic methods for special monomers, new polymerisation reactions and/or modifications of existing polymerisation pathways are also studied. In this area attention is also paid to the theoretical basis in order to get insight in the underlying structure-property relations. The goal is to achieve a rational material design (prof. dr. The development and optimisation in the group of modern NMR techniques to characterise polymer materials is oriented on the combination of spectroscopic, molecular dynamics and imaging. The goal is to increase the selectivity and to improve the quantitative methods. The materials are investigated in their liquid (solved) state but also in their original non disturbed state. As well the chemical structure as the molecular physical properties are determined with liquid and solid state NMR. Thanks to NMR microimaging these properties can now be investigated as a funciton of their position in the sample (prof. dr. Jan Gelan, jan.gelan@uhasselt.be).
