Title : Development of a cost-efficient public transport network (R-7233)
Abstract: Public transport usually needs to fulfill two main targets: giving accessibility to everyone and offering an alternative for private motorised transport. Moreover, this needs to be done in a cost-efficient way. A way to achieve this is by means of a hierarchical public transport system. This doctorate aims to find out on one hand how cost-efficient current public transport services are, and on the other hand how a cost-efficient public transport network can be designed. The designing will be done by means of quantitative analyses of changes in the public transport, using several performance indicators. The design principles for three network layers will be investigated: a core network, a complementary network, and, as the lowest layer in a hierarchical system, customised transport.
