Researcher Research Engineer 'CIRCOMP – Developing a circular steel-timber composite floor system through innovative and demountable shear connections'

Your function

As a research engineer, within the CIRCOMP project you will develop an innovative and efficient connection for steel-timber composite (STC) floors and deck systems, specifically designed for disassembly and reuse to support circular use of building materials in the construction sector. The project focuses on the development of an innovative connection, which is optimized and investigated through experimental testing, combined with finite element simulations, as well as on the proposal and validation of analytical design models. You will work together with the other members of the CERG research group and the UGent Woodlab team (partners in this project). You will also come into contact with steel working workshops and CLT construction companies.

Your team

The Construction Engineering Research Group (CERG) is a young research group within the Faculty of Engineering Technology of UHasselt. The research activities mainly focus on the design and mechanical behaviour of structures and structural parts made of concrete, masonry, steel and timber with a view for an optimal combination of these materials, in the form of composite. In the scope of a FWO-financed research project in the field of the circular economy “CIRCOMP – Developing a circular steel-timber composite floor system through innovative and demountable shear connections”, CERG wishes to recruit a full-time research engineer.

Your talents

  • Master of Engineering Technology, Master of Civil Engineering, Master of (Applied) Sciences (or equivalent)
  • You are collegial and you can work well in a team;
  • You have a strong interest in structural engineering research;
  • You can conduct research using the three classic research methods: i) experimental; ii) numerical (FEM) and iii) analytical (e.g. application of design standards);
  • You have a proactive and independent working attitude;
  • You can report clearly, both orally and in writing;
  • You have analytical and critical thinking skills;
  • You have experience with application-oriented research projects and can collaborate with other stakeholders (e.g. companies) to develop an optimal solution;
  • You have a developer mentality.
