PHDRINKS: PUTTING THE OXYGEN MASK ON YOURSELF FIRST

As part of the current edition of PhDrinks on April 30, the doctoral schools of UHasselt are organizing a keynote lecture by Dr Elke Smeets on 'Putting the oxygen mask on yourself first'.

This keynote will provide you with valuable insights from the science of self-compassion to help you value and support yourself throughout your PhD-journey. You will discover strategies to no longer be held back by your inner critic and experience greater fulfillment and autonomy. Research has consistently shown that self-compassion is a strong predictor for well-being and a reliable antidote to self-doubt, anxiety, and procrastination. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with kindness and concern when considering personal inadequacies, mistakes, failures, and painful life situations. Dr Elke Smeets, a former PhD student herself, will provide you with easy-to-apply strategies to get you back in your creative flow when faced with self-doubt.

Dr Elke Smeets has been teaching Positive Psychology to international students at Maastricht University since 2011. She is a keynote speaker for Better Minds at Work and trains psychologists and other professionals in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and Positive Psychology.

There will be a reception afterwards! However given the current circumstances this networking reception will take place online as well. All details regarding the practical organisation will be sent to you timely by email. In order to simulate a real reception as close as possible, goodie bags (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic according to your choice) will be foreseen for all participants which can be picked up from April 27, 2021 on at the reception desk of Hasselt University, campus Hasselt (Martelarenlaan 42, 3500 Hasselt - opening hours: 08:00-16:00). In case you are attending from abroad, an alternative will be offered to you in the form of a lunch voucher which you can use in our student restaurants once back on campus again. Please contact the doctoral schools again when back in Belgium to make an appointment to pick up your voucher.
