Hasselt University is an active hub in the global knowledge- and innovation web, for which she works together with universities, research centres, companies and organisations from all over the world. Yearly, UHasselt welcomes students, guest lecturers and researcher from all over the world and at the same time she stimulates her own students, staff members and researchers to spend some time abroad. UHasselt values internationalisation and mobility a lot. Therefore, her internationalisation policy has the prior objective to enhance the international dimension in the operations of UHasselt, with the following four strategic goals (SG):
SG1 The enhancement of the international appearance of UHasselt
Successful internationalisation actions are essential to pursue a sustainable international appearance. Therefore, UHasselt wants to build a strong international network with other universities. An extended international network of alumni, who are presented as ambassadors of UHasselt, can also strengthen the international character of the university. Apart from that, UHasselt wants to improve her international image and visibility with promotional and communication, like her website, social media accounts and offline communication channels. SG2 The stimulation and facilitation of high quality international mobility
UHasselt makes use of an efficient operational policy for high quality international mobility. She centralises all expertise of international mobility in one single point of contact (SPOC), to which her students, researchers and staff members are redirected for matters concerning international mobility. UHasselt also designed, implemented and follows clear and transparent procedures for the (pre-)registration of students, researchers and lecturers. Next to that, UHasselt greatly values an accessible and hospitable welcoming policy for foreign students, researchers and lecturers. For this, UHasselt invests in English communication and the language courses that are offered for regular and foreign students, researchers and staff members.
SG3 An international mindset, carried by all UHasselt students, researchers and staff members
Hasselt University wants to train her students, researchers and staff members to become world citizens with an international mindset. Therefore, UHasselt aims to make the internationalisation concept more visible within the university by organising information sessions and trainings and within her communication. UHasselt also has an active internal learning network about internationalisation and development cooperation programmes in order to gain more knowledge and knowhow for a better international mindset. Apart from that, internationalisation is embedded in the curriculum of all the study programmes by offering several mobility activities for students, lecturers and researchers (for example: a study or placement abroad, English master programmes, summer schools etc.).
SG4 The further development of “education and science sharing” with development countries
UHasselt wants to play a social responsible role by sharing her expertise in education and research with institutions in development countries and developing countries by an university development cooperation (UDC). More and more academics and students gain awareness of the importance of UDC and engage in interdisciplinary development initiatives within their own research specialisation. Moreover, every faculty and research institution is stimulated to build up development related capacities. The cooperation with external stakeholders is thereby further expanded and new sustainable partnerships are formed within the frame of development related initiativeseers of each faculty.
