Kathleen Sanen, Nina Swinnen and Katrijn Vanschoenbeek, all three PhD holder from Hasselt University, will describe how they developed their career path, what the role of their PhD has been during this process, which competences obtained during their PhD they still use today, which decisions they had to make, etc. Over lunch, participants will be able to ask them questions in an informal way.

Kathleen Sanen is manager client services at Ismar Healthcare in Lier. She started her education in Biomedical Sciences at Hasselt University, Diepenbeek in 2006. Five years later, she obtained her Master’s degree in Clinical Molecular Sciences. Kathleen subsequently did her PhD in the research group of Biophysics in collaboration with the Morphology group at the Biomedical Research Institute, Hasselt University. In search of new scientific challenge not involving laboratory work, she joined Ismar Healthcare in 2016 as a medical information manager. At present, she is responsible for different projects sponsored by pharmaceutical companies (e.g. symposia, webinars, newsletters) and is involved in the development of independent educational content such as congress highlights and case-based platforms for physicians.

Nina Swinnen is manager event services at Ismar Healthcare in Lier. From 2004 to 2009, she studied Biomedical Sciences at Hasselt University. Afterwards she obtained a joint PhD in Biomedical Sciences at Hasselt University, Diepenbeek, and Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris. Before joining the Ismar Healthcare team, Nina worked as data manager for Janssen (outsourced by Valesta) and as post-doctoral researcher at the Biomedical research institute at Hasselt University. In 2015, she started working as medical information manager for Ismar Healthcare and after 2 years she transitioned to the function of manager event services. In her current function she is responsible for the coordination of international company-sponsored medical events and satellite symposia at international medical congresses.

Katrijn Vanschoenbeek: Katrijn Vanschoenbeek graduated as a master in Clinical Psychology at the Free University of Brussels (2004) and as a master in Clinical and Molecular Life Sciences at Hasselt University (2009). From 2009 untill 2015, she worked as a Phd student (in the field of aptasensing) and as a teaching assistent (bachelor Biomedical Sciences and Medicine) at Hasselt University. Since 2016, she works for the Belgian Cancer Registry. As a member of the research team, she is doing cancer research based on administrative databases.
