This newsletter provides an overview of all upcoming activities for PhD students organized by the doctoral schools, links to other potentially interesting events or information, and relevant calls.

More details on, and registration links for, upcoming activities are available on the websites of the doctoral schools. When you enrol for a doctoral school activity, please make sure to be present. You are allowed to cancel your enrolment up to 1 week before the activity by sending an email to In case of no-show or cancellation later than 1 week before the activity, a fee of 250 euros can be charged. All doctoral school activities taking place from mid-March until July have either been digitalized or postponed to a later date. For activities planned later on, we await further guidelines from both Hasselt University and the Belgian government.
For each specific workshop, course or information session, we aim to find the most appropriate solution, based on the activity’s content and duration, as well as on the preference and possibilities of the trainer/speaker(s). 6. Flanders Training Network for Methodology and Statistics (FLAMES)

1. Virtual Job Market for Young Researchers

The Virtual Job Market for Young Researchers breaks free from all coronavirus restrictions, allowing you to connect with companies and organisations -and possibly even meet your potential future employer- from the comfort of your own home via desk, mobile or tablet device. Verotech, Umicore, Faro, Colruyt, Schelstraete Delacourt Associates, Kelly and many more companies and organisations (like FWO, B.A.E.F., Fulbright,...) will set up "booths", filled to the brim with information about everything from job openings to advancement opportunities, for you to visit between June 22 and July 3. On June 25 the "booths" will be “staffed" by recruiters, hiring managers and advisers who look forward to answering all of your questions! 2. myShortlist

myShortlist is a scientifically based orientation platform that helps you build your career. It identifies your interests, strengths, and values and suggests a concrete career direction. myShortlist furthermore suggests job functions and company cultures that match your unique profile. After gaining self-knowledge, myShortlist will reveal all secrets of a powerful CV, elevator pitch, and LinkedIn profile. The platform also guides you through all steps of the application process, from sending your CV to signing your contract. 3. Schedule online meeting with coordinator

For questions related to the DS requirements, DS portfolio, course offer, ... you may schedule an online meeting with one of the coordinators of the DS. Single or simple questions may be asked by email, but for multiple questions this is the preferred approach.


1. Call for international & intersectoral mobility

Thanks to the financial support from the Flemish Government, the doctoral schools of Hasselt University are able to award travel grants to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for participation in an international summer school or a short research stay abroad. Also, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers can be awarded intersectoral mobility grants for intersectoral summer schools or research projects conducted at and in collaboration with non-academic institutions (companies, hospitals, …). The current call concerns activities in the period July - December 2020. The submission deadline is June 15, 2020. You will receive the result of your application by June 30, 2020.

2. Doctors gezocht voor de Vlaamse PhD Cup 2020

Ben je in de voorbije twee jaar tot doctor gepromoveerd? Dan daagt de Vlaamse PhD Cup je uit om je onderzoek met iedereen te delen: zonder voetnoten of specialistentaal, maar gebracht als een helder verhaal. Na een intensieve mediatraining volgt de ultieme test: “Kun jij de kern van je doctoraat in drie minuten uitleggen?” De inzet: een opleidingsvoucher voor de Vlerick Business School t.w.v. 5.000 euro, een ticket om een college te geven bij de Universiteit van Vlaanderen en maakt kans op een boekpublicatie bij Academia Press. Alle info en voorwaarden op - inschrijven kan t.e.m. 30 juni.

3. Prijs Derine 2020 voor doctoraatsproefschrift dat bijdraagt aan rechtvaardigheid

Het fonds Prof. Raymond Derine werd gecreëerd om onderzoek en studies aan te moedigen die meer rechtvaardigheid in de maatschappij beogen. Dit doel wordt geconcretiseerd door een prijs toe te kennen aan een doctoraatsproefschrift dat bijdraagt tot een meer rechtvaardige samenleving. Het kan gaan om juridische, politieke, economische, filosofische of sociale rechtvaardigheid. Bij de beoordeling geldt de brede interpretatie van ‘meer rechtvaardigheid’. De adviescommissie bepaalt de rangorde van de ingezonden proefschriften in functie van hun wetenschappelijke uitmuntendheid, maar ook van het engagement, de creativiteit en het innoverend vermogen waarvan deze proefschriften getuigen. De prijs bedraagt € 2.500 bruto. Het betreft een tweejaarlijkse prijs en daarom gaat het voor de prijs van dit jaar om proefschriften die zijn verdedigd in de periode tussen 15 november 2018 en 15 oktober 2020. EURON mobility grant

The EURON mobility grant is intended for PhD students from the research groups affiliated to the EURON programme. Applicants are expected to spend a period of maximal three months at a EURON partner university for the purpose of methodological training or a joint project. There is a preference for newly established collaborations or initiatives. The exchange has to start within 6 months after submission (between 15 June 2020 – 15 December 2020). They will reevaluate this once we are able to travel again. The mobility grants cover travel and accommodation costs for up to 1.500 EUR.
