This newsletter provides an overview of all upcoming activities for PhD students organized by the doctoral schools, links to other potentially interesting events or information, and relevant calls.

More details on, and registration links for, upcoming activities are available on the websites of the doctoral schools. When you enrol for a doctoral school activity, please make sure to be present. You are allowed to cancel your enrolment up to 1 week before the activity by sending an e-mail to doctoralschools@uhasselt.be. In case of no-show or cancellation later than 1 week before the activity, a fee of 250 euros can be charged. Details

10. Modules on education

Most modules on education are organized in a demand-driven way by the Department educational excellence, professionalization and diversity. This means that instructors/professors can 'order' a tailor-made workshop on a specific topic for a specific group of interested people. However, they also have a limited open course offer. These open courses are announced by e-mail, as well as in this newsletter.

1. New administrative assistant doctoral schools

Since March 1, 2019 the doctoral schools have a new administrative assistant, Hilde Vanderheyden. She replaces Sophie Indestege who has taken on a new function within the research coordination office.

2. Job market for young researchers

The Job Market for Young Researchers (ICC Ghent, 2 April), which hosts over 100 companies eager to recruit PhD degree holders, is a not to be missed event for job seekers. However, there are many other benefits to be gained from attending Flanders’ largest career event for young researchers.

  • Develop an understanding of current labour market trends.
    Joining the Job Market for Young Researchers, you will learn about who’s hiring for what kind of positions, as well as find out about the transversal skills and competencies currently valued by employers. You may attend the Job Market with a single career path in mind, but leave with several new prospects ahead of you.
  • Get your CV reviewed
    When applying for a job, your CV is your main calling card. At the Job Market for Young Researchers professionals will look over your CV and offer suggestions on how to improve it. Register, sign up for CV analysis and upload your CV.
  • Final career coaching slots
    Want to explore your career identity, overcome the feeling of being “stuck”, position yourself for future opportunities …? Experience what career coaching can do for you. Final speed career coaching slots are up for grabs; so, do not hesitate, register and claim your slot. 
  • Access to free workshops
    The Job Market for Young Researchers offers a wide range of free workshops and info sessions tailored exclusively to the needs of PhD candidates and postdocs. With the exception of “Centen voor vrijwilligerswerk in Europa / Funding for volunteering in Europe”, all are offered in English.
  • Develop your professional networks
    Always try and make a good first impression. Employers may remember you for future positions and contact you to fill them. Make sure you look your best and bring with you your CV and business cards.
