Welcome to the doctoral schools' newsletter which includes an overview of all upcoming activities for PhD students and postdocs.

More details on, and registration links for, upcoming activities are available on the websites of the doctoral schools. When you enrol for a doctoral school activity, please make sure to be present. You are allowed to cancel your enrolment up to 1 week before the activity by sending an e-mail to doctoralschools@uhasselt.be. In case of no-show or cancellation later than 1 week before the activity, a fee of 250 euros can be charged. Details

Research skills and transferable skills - details & registration

5. Modules on education

Most modules on education are organized in a demand-driven way by the Department educational excellence, professionalization and diversity. This means that instructors/professors can 'order' a tailor-made workshop on a specific topic for a specific group of interested people. However, they also have a limited open course offer. These open courses are announced by e-mail, as well as in this newsletter.

6. Flanders Training Network for Methodology and Statistics (FLAMES)

Courses on statistics and methodology, which take place throughout the academic year at all Flemish universities. The courses organized at UHasselt will be listed in this newsletter and on the DS website; the others can be found on the FLAMES website.

2. Prijs Raymond Derine

De prijs Derine, in nagedachtenis van prof. Raymond Derine, wordt tweejaarlijks uitgereikt voor een doctoraatsproefschrift dat meer rechtvaardigheid in de maatschappij beoogt. Dit kan gaan om juridische, politieke, economische, filosofische of sociale rechtvaardigheid. De prijs bedraagt € 2.500 bruto. Om in aanmerking te komen voor de Prijs Derine van 2018 moeten de kandidaten hun proefschrift verdedigd hebben in de periode tussen 15 oktober 2016 en 15 november 2018. De deadline voor het indienen van het proefschrift is 15 november 2018. Meer informatie is hier beschikbaar. 

3. Prijs Joseph Merlot - Joseph Leclercq

De Prijs Joseph Merlot - Joseph Leclercq werd in 1964 ingesteld door de Belgische afdeling van het CIRIEC en heeft als doel het belonen van een doctoraatsthesis op het vlak van de publieke economie en uitgevoerd in een van de disciplines van de menswetenschappen (economie, management, politieke wetenschappen, openbaar bestuur, recht, sociologie, enz.). 

De Prijs Joseph Merlot - Joseph Leclercq bedraagt 3.500 EUR en wordt om de drie jaar toegekend door een jury. Deadline voor het indienen van aanvragen is 15 januari 2019. Meer informatie is hier beschikbaar.

4. Open access week 2018

During the 11th international Open Access Week, themed “Designing Equitable Foundations for Open Knowledge”, the Belgian universities organize from the October 22 until October 26 an online event entitled “Everyone on the road to open science”. The focus will be on different aspects of open science, such as open peer review, the FAIR data principles, research data management, legal aspects, etc. All sessions are English-spoken. You can now register here for the webinars.


FUNDING

1. Fellowships for doctoral research in the USA during 2019-2020

BAEF, the Belgian American Educational Foundation Inc., is the leading independent philanthropy in the support of exchanging university students, scientists and scholars between the United States and Belgium.

At the moment, they offer fellowships for doctoral research and fellowships for biomedical engineering research (Henri Benedictus Fund) during 2019-2020 in the USA. Fellowships must start between July 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 and fellows are expected to stay for a period of 12 months in the USA. Doctoral applicants should have completed no more than 2 years of their PhD program by July 1, 2019. Deadline for application is October 31, 2018 at 12 noon. More information is available here.

2. Gustave Boël-Sofina Fellowships

Thanks to the help of the King Baudouin Foundation, acting on behalf of the Platform for Education and Talent, FWO and F.R.S.-FNRS may grant the Gustave Boël-Sofina Fellowships to talented PhD students for a research and/or training stay abroad. Deadline for application is November 5, 2018. PhD students who obtaind a MA or MSc after November 1, 2014 can apply for a research stay abroad for a period of 6-12 months within academic year 2019-2020.
