Welcome to the doctoral schools' newsletter which includes an overview of all upcoming activities for PhD students and postdocs.

More details on, and registration links for, upcoming activities are available on the websites of the doctoral schools. When you enrol for a doctoral school activity, please make sure to be present. You are allowed to cancel your enrolment up to 1 week before the activity by sending an e-mail to doctoralschools@uhasselt.be. In case of no-show or cancellation later than 1 week before the activity, a fee of 250 euros can be charged. Details

2. Individual career coaching

First starting point of this academic year: December
If you are interested, please send an e-mail to doctoralschools@uhasselt.be with subject: 'Application Career Coaching' before November 7, 2017. The e-mail should include a short motivation, first name, last name, faculty and start date of PhD/postdoc.

4. FLAMES course: Method in Research Design

Takes place on November 27-29, 2017

8. Modules on education

Unlike previous years, most modules on education will now be organized in a demand-driven way. This means that instructors/professors can 'order' a tailor-made workshop on a specific topic for a specific group of interested people. However, there will also still be a limited open course offer. These open courses will be announced by e-mail, as well as in this newsletter.

BiR&D Multi-Disciplinary PhD Award 2018

The FWO and the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique – FNRS award two prizes (€10,000 each) in recognition of a PhD thesis that presents an original and multidisciplinary contribution with potential industrial valorisation and societal relevance. The two prizes will be awarded in the following domains: “Life & Health Sciences” and “Science & Technology”.

Application deadline: November 1, 2017

Language support

Learn new languages and cultures via the computer, for absolute beginners.

Dutch for beginners (English - Dutch) is an online e-learning module for tablet, PC, Mac and smartphone, easy to access and available via our servers 24/7. The e-module, which is part of the series LinguaCom, is suitable for complete self-study or semi-autonomous learning ( face-to-face or e-coaching ). In this e-learning module, you will learn how to communicate in day-to-day Dutch.


Mentor/mentee project

Doing a PhD can be fun and hard at the same time. You all experience ups and downs; you all occasionally experience problems which you then overcome. It's a learning process that is easier for some than for others. But everyone needs someone to talk to from time to time. For this reason, a mentor/mentee project was launched in 2015.

Mentees are PhD students in the first half of their PhD. Mentors are more advanced PhD students (second half) and postdocs. The mentoring process is meant to be more than just Q&A with respect to practical aspects. Mentors and mentees can talk about anything, including what it means to be a PhD student, which difficulties or pitfalls one can be confronted with, professional goals, etc. More details.

On December 13, 14:00-17:00, there will be an introductory workshop explaining the concept of mentoring and discussing aspects like the mentoring process, personal expectations, possible conversation topics, etc. The workshop is organized for mentors and mentees intermixed but is also open to people interested in the topic who are not a mentor/mentee this academic year. Register here for the workshop, before November 30, 2017.
