Wouter Maes was born in 1978 in Neerpelt, Belgium. He obtained his PhD at the KU Leuven in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. W. Dehaen, working on the synthesis and application of dendrimers incorporating porphyrins and other heterocyclic building blocks. After that he has been working as a Postdoctoral fellow of the Fund for Scientific Research-Flanders (FWO Vlaanderen) within the laboratory of Prof. W. Dehaen, focusing mainly on porphyrins and related macrocycles, and (hetera)calixarenes. External postdoctoral stays were conducted in Paris (Prof. E. Rose) and Oxford (Prof. H. Anderson). In November 2009, he was appointed Assistant Professor at Hasselt University. At present, he is Associate Professor at the same university and heading the DSOS group focusing on the synthesis of novel small molecule and conjugated polymer materials for applications in organic electronics and advanced healthcare.
