Sam Gielen received his Bachelor in Chemistry in 2014 from Hasselt University, Belgium. After finishing his Bachelor, he obtained a Master degree in Chemical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology. In his Bachelor thesis, he studied the flow synthesis of block copolymers initiated by UV light in the Polymer Reaction Design group of Prof. dr T. Junkers. His Master thesis was performed in the Supramolecular Polymers group of Prof. dr R.P. Sijbesma, working on ferroelectric materials based on hydrogen-bonded discotic columnar liquid crystals. In October 2016, he joined the DSOS group as a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. de W. Maes, studying porphyrinoid materials for near infra-red organic photodetectors.
