Empty file attachment after uploading to Blackboard

If you open a file after selecting it for submission to Blackboard using Microsoft Windows 10 and the Edge browser, you may discover the file contains no data. This issue occurs when you select a file to upload the Blackboard and then open that file in the originating application before you actually submit the file to Blackboard.

For example:

  • Harry wants to submit an essay on giants for his History of Magic course. He clicks on the "Browse My Computer" button in Blackboard to select the Microsoft Word document.
  • He clicks Open, but does not actually Submit the document to the assignment. Instead, he decides to check the document to make sure he picked the right file.
  • Outside of Blackboard, he uses Windows Explorer to open the file in Microsoft Word. After he opens it to verify the contents, he closes the document.
  • Harry returns to Blackboard and now clicks on Submit to attach the file and turn in his assignment.

If you follow the same steps as Harry, you’ll see that a file with the correct filename will be attached to the assignment. However, when you open the attachment, it will be blank.

PLEASE NOTE

This issue may affect both students who are submitting attachments to Assignments and instructors who are submitting attachments to Course Content.

  1. Workaround #1:

    Do not open the source file after selecting it for upload into Blackboard Learn while using Microsoft Edge in Windows 10. As a matter of practice or habit, you may open files for inspection before accessing the area where you want to upload the file, but please remember to close the files before selecting and submitting the attachment in Blackboard itself.

  2. Workaround #2:

    Use a different browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
