Photonics is the science of the harnessing of light. Photonics encompasses the generation of light, the detection of light, the management of light through guidance, manipulation, and amplification, and most importantly, its utilization for the benefit of mankind. Over the past two decades, the Brussels Photonics Team (BPHOT) has set up and continuously improved a technology supply chain focusing on polymer (micro-)photonics. This has enabled BPHOT to engage in a wide variety of applications, ranging from displays and 3D stereoscopic projection systems, over optical interconnects and fiber connectivity solutions, to lab-on-a-chip and biophotonics applications. B-PHOT’s technology supply chain contains optical modelling, mastering and prototyping of (micro-)optical components, advanced metrology, low-cost replication for larger volume production and proof-of-concept demonstration.
Thanks to our Deep Proton Writing and Ultraprecision Diamond Tooling technologies, we can process optical components to feature extreme optical quality finish, high-aspect ratio structures and absolute freeform shapes. For sub-micrometer features, we make use of 3D direct laser writing, based on two-photon photopolymerization using femtosecond laser pulses, which allows us to create e.g. diffractive optical components, microfluidic bioscaffolds, etc. Finally, our 300mm wafer-scale hot embossing technology enables low-cost replication of the components at pre-production level quantities in an endless variety of highly functional (biodegradable, biocompatible, recyclable, stretchable, flexible,…) polymers.
Having the full supply chain in house proves to be of vital importance not only for cutting-edge applied research, but also to provide companies with a one-stop-shop solution for their photonics innovation challenges. Indeed, B-PHOT is also very involved in industrial-oriented research. Several examples will be discussed, as well as the role of BPHOT as one the Innovation Hubs within the European Project ACTPHAST, which aims at assisting European companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, in the large domain of photonics with innovation support that is tailored to their business needs.
