Research in the picture - Bart Vermang & thin film solar cells
Sep 13, 2017

The European Research Council awarded the research project of Bart Vermang with a 2 million euro grant. What is this research project about and what are the main goals?

Here is the interview with Bart Vermang and Marc D'Olieslaeger (deputy director of IMO-IMOMEC).

What is the research about?

Bart Vermang

Thin film solar cells, a relatively new type of solar cells that are ultra-thin as a foil - and thus easily placed on facades and curved surfaces. At the Institute for Materials Research (imo-imomec) we have been researching for many years. And we are not the only ones: worldwide, hundreds of researchers try to increase the efficiency of this type of solar cell and reduce cost.

What is innovative then exactly?

Bart Vermang:

We do not focus on this efficiency unilaterally, but bring in two new parameters: reliability and reproducibility. In this way, we want to ensure that we do not only bring academic results to academics, but that our findings can also be widely applied in the industry - with technologies already available at the moment.
