Novel wide band gap semiconductors such as diamond, aluminium nitride and boron nitride, have in common that they possess unique combination of chemical and physical properties that makes them ideal candidates for many advanced applications. To fulfil this positive outlook, it is of utmost importance that there is a thorough understanding of influence of the used deposition conditions on the subsequent material properties. This knowledge allows to deposit materials with specially tailored properties for a wide range of fundamental and applied investigations in new and emerging fields such as smart bio surfaces, thermionic emitters, and quantum physics.
A wide range of advanced and highly sensitive electrical & optical characterisation techniques were set-up at IMO-IMOMEC enabling the detection of low concentrations of defects that are not detectable with standard techniques such as absorption measurements. The use of the mentioned materials is studied in collaboration with several national and international partners.
