GC/MS is a powerful hyphenated technique for the separation, identification and quantification of complex mixtures.  Separation occurs in the GC apparatus.  Separated compounds are introduced in the mass spectrometer.  Ionization (electron impact or chemical ionization) of the separated compounds results in the molecular ion and fragment ions which are separated on their m/z ratio.
The resulting mass spectrum is a unique feature of a compound and can be used for identification through a library search (NIST library).
The peak area in the chromatogram gives information on the amount of each component or dedicated component within a mixture after calibration (ppb-ppm concentration range).
