TGA-THERMAL DESORPTION-GC/MS

 

TGA-TD-GC/MS is a hyphenated thermal analytical technique in which released volatiles from a thermo balance (TGA) are collected on a suitable adsorbent (e.g. tenax).  Collected components are subsequently thermal desorbed (TD) and volatiles are transferred to a GC/MS apparatus (see GC/MS) for separation, identification and quantification.
The use of specific detection by GC/MS allows enhancing sensitively for the analysis of the released individual volatiles in different temperature ranges.  TGA can be carried out under different controlled atmosphere (inert and oxidative) and dedicated temperature programs.

Typical applications

  • Simulation of a incineration or pyrolysis process.
  • Identification and quantification of the volatile released during a thermal process (incineration and/or pyrolysis).
  • Identification and quantitative analysis of the volatiles released during thermoformation processes (e.g. extrusion).
  • Evolved gas analysis.
