The team of Prof. dr. Bart Vermang works on (chalcogenide) thin film photovoltaics (PV), and targets innovation in terms of (i) PV materials, (ii) solar cell architectures and (iii) PV applications.
(i) PV material innovation focuses on the development, characterization and optimization of new PV materials, e.g. for emerging PV free of critical raw materials (CRM), high-efficiency tandem devices or (transparent) PV windows.
(ii) Solar cell architecture innovation focuses on the development of advanced three-dimensional thin film solar cell concepts (to enhance efficiency, cost and stability) stemming from Si PV, i.e. consisting of surface passivation layers and light management methods integrated into ultra-thin solar cells.
(iii) Application innovation examples are: (a) the development of semi-transparent PV products with customized size, and (b) a study of the potential of state-of-the-art thin film solar cells for space (by examining the impact of typical space conditions).
