IKEA recently opened a new store in Hasselt near the highway ramp of the N80 with the E313. Its arrival worried quite some local residents and commuters. The Sint-Truidersteenweg (N80) struggled for years with traffic jams and the Hasselt Ring was also known for its long delays during the morning and evening rush hour. Additional traffic would only aggravate the traffic disruption. Redesigning all intersections on the Sint-Truidersteenweg between the outer ring and the Expressweg and replacing the roundabout (N80 x N722) by traffic lights was therefore decided. The traffic signs would be re-evaluated too. AWV Limburg asked IMOB to identify the most efficient traffic signs to guarantee a smooth traffic circulation.
Together with iNFRANEA and Connect, IMOB carried out a driving simulator study. 22 subjects tested seven routes. They were confronted with two types of traffic signs: the standard ones standing next to the road or the new signpost with integrated traffic lights. The new concept turned out to be successful and was put into practice not much later.
