A Doctoral (PhD) Grant Strategic Basic Research (2x2 years) allows young researchers to develop into strategically thinking and innovation-oriented scientists.
Strategic basic research in the context of a PhD grant stands for challenging and innovative research (at PhD level), which, if successful, may in the longer term lead to innovative applications with economic added value (for specific companies, for a collective of companies, or a sector, or in line with the VRWI transition areas)
Applicants must have a master degree from one of the countries of the EU or the EER or Switzerland. This degree must be obtained with at least ‘distinction’. In addition, candidates are only eligible within the first five years after obtaining this degree. In case the candidate possess more than one degree from the 2nd cycle, this rule only applies to the degree in the same area of study as the one the PhD proposal addresses. At the beginning of the fellowship (January 1st), the applicant must have no more than 18 months of scientific experience.
The deadline for submission is 15 September (5PM). If this date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the closing date is moved to the following Monday at 5:00 PM.
The Research Coordination office:
- Provides feedback on your application text in preparation
- Offers applicants a one day presentation skills course to prepare for the expert panels
- Helps with process-related questions (e.g. questions about the application template, submission procedure etc.)
- Acts as an intermediary between the researchers and FWO
