Expertise of the research group :

The Materials Physics Group consists out of five sub groups, in which the research activities are organised : ONE (Organic and nanostructured electronics), WBGM (Wide Band Gap Materials), BIOS (biosensors), NP (nanostructured Physics) and ELPHYC (Electrical and Physical Characterisation )

ONE : Study of structure-property relations (electro-optical properties, morphology,..) of novel organic based and nanostructured semi-conducting material systems / Development of next generation electro-optical applications (LEDs, solar cells, transistors, sensors, electrical nanowires,.. based on these new semiconductors.

WBGM : Deposition of novel WBGM materials with different functionalities. Through the use of MW PE CVD and PVD techniques thin films from materials such as CVD diamond, h-BN and AlN, are studied in different forms ranging from nano over micro to single crystalline. Highly sensitive opto-electronic spectroscopic and transport techniques enable advanced characterisation of the film properties. Fundamental investigations are carried out around such issues as transport, doping, seeding and functionalisation. Device driven research includes diamond-based acoustic devices, heterostructures with hard and soft materials and UV-sensors.

BIOS:  development of label-free, real-time sensors for the detection and characterization of proteins, nucleic acids, drugs, and environmental pollutants / superconductivity, magnetism, thin-film techniques

NP: functionalisation of surfaces by adding various types of (magnetic/non-magnetic/elemental/alloy) nanostructures used either as building blocks or as (consumable) templates for subsequent nano-lithographic steps / organic-inorganic hybrid structures , ultra-thin films and coatings.

ELPHYC: support to the other groups with expertise in analytical techniques
