Title : Development of the ideal immobilization matrix for NORM and other harmful components through geopolymerization of mineral wastes. (R-6724)
Abstract: Worldwide, mineral waste streams like phosphogypsum or ashes from coal and waste combustion are produced in large quantities. At the same time, the construction sector uses large numbers of 'pure' minerals, which could be replaced - from a chemical perspective - by the considered mineral waste streams. However, the presence of low concentrations of harmful components in these waste streams complicates the economical valorization. This study focusses on the potential of immobilization of harmful components in newly developed construction materials based on geopolymerization. These construction materials could be developed especially for the re-use of mineral waste streams. Today, research on immobilization studies is lacking and this constitutes an important barrier that still has to be overcome to introduce these construction materials on the market. A major gap in the knowledge that this study hereby intends to tackle are issues related to the presence of naturally occurring radionuclides.
