dr. Ilse VAN DAMME
Each year, Hasselt University organizes a course Academic English for PhD students. This course seeks to familiarize PhD students with academic writing conventions. Attention will be paid to appropriate, reader-friendly writing, basic phrases in different sections of an academic paper (abstract, introduction, methodology, discussion/conclusions), writing units of measure, displaying numbers with figures or words, the difference between British and American English. In addition, the course pays ample attention to functional grammar (tenses, linking words), commonly made mistakes ('Dutchisms') and interference mistakes/non-native structures. Example sentences are taken from previous sample papers and relate to students' specific fields of study. Participants are invited to submit their papers in progress for correction and error analysis. The closing session covers presentation skills and graphs & charts.
