YES, I CAN… CAN I? ASSESSING STRENGTHS AND COMPETENCES

CONTENT

For many people outside academia, a PhD is a mysterious thing. Perhaps even for you, it is a bit unclear what you actually gain - on a personal level - by doing a PhD. Obviously you will learn a lot, but how to translate that knowledge to other contexts? How to assess the value of a PhD? How to assess your own strengths and competences?
When you want to take your career into your own hands, at any point in life, it is important to know yourself. In this workshop, by Dr Ilse Van Damme, we will make a start in thinking about your strengths and competences. What are you good at? What can you learn about yourself from your experiences so far? What would you like to get better at? How can you talk about your strengths in an authentic way? You will be handed tools to help you reflect upon yourself, which can be used to document your competences throughout your PhD/postdoc and which you can fall back on at any point in your career.

Please note: This workshop has been part of the program of (some editions of) the PhD introduction day. If you have already participated in that context, please do not register again. There is also considerable overlap with session 3 of 'Career development: Gain insight into your talents and ambitions'.

Learning outcomes

After attending this workshop, you will ...

  • know which language/words to use when describing talents and competences,
  • know (several of) your own strengths,
  • understand the importance of reflecting upon your strengths, with an eye to both your daily functioning and the preparation of your further career,
  • dispose of various tools to keep track of your competency development.

Competences

You will not only reflect upon your strengths, you will also (further) develop certain competences by participating in this workshop. The following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

  • personal effectiveness:
    • self-development
    • self-confidence
  • interpersonal competences:
    • collaboration
