ACADEMIC ENGLISH

Throughout the academic year, the doctoral schools of Hasselt University are organizing several editions of the course 'Academic English' (taught by Prof. Eric Caers).

This course seeks to familiarize PhD students with academic writing conventions. Attention will be paid to reader-friendly writing, basic phrases in different sections of an academic paper (abstract, introduction, methodology, discussion/conclusions), writing units of measurement, displaying numbers with figures or words, the difference between British and American English. In addition, the course pays ample attention to functional grammar (tenses, linking words), commonly made mistakes ('Dutchisms') and interference mistakes/non-native structures. Example sentences are taken from previous sample papers and relate to students' specific fields of study. Participants are invited to submit their papers in progress for correction and error analysis. The closing session covers presentation skills and graphs & charts.
