This two-day workshop (by Marc Van den Eede, WeGo’s) will provide you with general tools with respect to presenting and speaking for an audience. The focus is not limited to academic presentations; the workshop is relevant to all types of presentations. It comprises the following aspects:

  • How to build a story that fits with the expectations of my audience (audience based, whatever the target group, purpose and/or message might be)
  • How to improve my speaking and personal “sales” leverage - how to make a connection, using amongst others the Q&A philosophy, vocal strengths, adoption time and word mirroring.

There are two editions in 2019.

For whom?

  • PhD students - 9 places available per edition

  • 1st edition: April 29 & May 13, 2019, from 9:00 until 17:30
  • 2nd edition: November 12 & 28, 2019, from 9:00 until 17:30
  • Participation on both days is required. A sandwich lunch will be provided.

  • 1st edition: UHasselt - campus Hasselt, Faculty of Law, room FR-0.02
  • 2nd edition: UHasselt - campus Hasselt, Faculty of Law, room FR-1.07

  • This is a hands-on training, during which you will need to give several presentations (minimum 6 in 2 days, recorded on video). You will need to bring one powerpoint (or prezi) presentation; all other presentations are prepared during the workshop itself.

  • Closed since Oct 14, 2019.
  • As places are limited, registering does not automatically imply that you will be able to participate. You will receive a confirmation e-mail.
  • Please cancel your registration at least one week in advance in case you cannot make it (cf. cancellation & no-show policy).

Acknowledged as?

  • DS BSH: category 'research management & communication skills' - workshop on communication skills
  • DS MLS: category 'transferable skills' - one compulsory elective course
  • DS ST: category 'scientific & generic communication' - once course about generic communication

This course exceeded my expectations. Marc has brought me/us so much useful tips and tricks during this workshop that is not only applicable for our PhD but also for our future career. This was by far one of the most useful workshops that I have followed and I would recommend it to every PhD student.

Public speaking is an important practical aspect for PhD students. As a PhD student you need to speak at many forums to inspire people about your research. This session provides the opportunity to learn about your weaknesses as a speaker and provides some practical exercises to improve them. I really worked out my shortcomings as a speaker in a positive interactive environment.
