Whether facing a journalist, a policymaker, a grant jury or an audience, storytelling helps you connect with your audience. This workshop, by Critical Narratives, puts participants to work with the tools of storytelling, encouraging them to break out of the academic paradigm and think of their work more creatively.
By analysing various examples of creative academic dissemination (including video, podcast, graphic novel, performance lecture), we will see how storytelling elements are applied and discuss what makes them work (or not). Participants will look for an effective story within their research and explore which medium and style are best to reach their audience.

After having attended this workshop, participants ...
- understand benefits of different media,
- have identified their audience and ideal communication medium,
- have defined the ideal storytelling medium for their research,
- are able to clearly identify their communication needs and the narrative potential of their work.
A worksheet is included to help draft a communication plan that can make their work resonate with the audience(s) of their choice.
An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:
