Every year is divided into blocks.

  • Year 1: 2 blocks of 8 weeks, followed by a period in which optional courses are taken and the junior practical training is organized. The latter enables students to acquire skills in modern research techniques. These skills are necessary to successfully execute the scientific practical training in the second master’s year.
  • Year 2: 1 theoretical block of 8 weeks, a senior practical training of 30 weeks. All theoretical blocks comprise expert lectures, journal clubs, visits to labs and clinics, and individual assignments.
  • The senior practical training: the 30-week senior practical training period provides students the opportunity to deepen their insight into specific subjects linked to the central research themes offered at the participating research institutes of Maastricht University and Hasselt University.

The senior practical training can also be taken in hospitals and biotech or pharmaceutical companies, and in partner institutes abroad. During this period, students work out a complete and independent scientific research project, including literature search, formulation of their research hypothesis, scheduling of the experimental execution and data processing, execution of the research, and writing a research (master’s) thesis.

The cross-border educational framework between Maastricht University and Hasselt University greatly enriches the master’s programme.

* Research topics for master’s project and dissertation are available at Hasselt University, Maastricht University and at top-level research institutes in Belgium and abroad
(**) Research possibilities include topics in toxicology, molecular epidemiology, environmental conservation…
