MASTER OF TRANSPORTATION SCIENCES


MISSION

Transport plays an important role in every society. The unique Bachelor’s/Master’s degree programme in Transportation Sciences trains students to become academic transport scientists who take a critical and multidisciplinary approach to current and future, regional and international transport challenges and develop solutions that take account of sustainability and the needs of different stakeholders.

VISION

The Bachelor’s/Master’s programme in Transportation Sciences meets local, regional and global transport challenges by:

  • producing high-quality, critical and engaged transport scientists who are able to identify and take advantage of transport-related opportunities;
  • working with organisations, businesses, governments, other knowledge centres and social actors in order to build broad support;
  • taking a multidisciplinary approach to the field of transport;
  • approaching transport issues from an international viewpoint. This mission and vision can be completely embedded in Hasselt University’s mission, vision and values statement.

EDUCATIONAL QUALITY

The educational quality report provides an analysis of the programme’s educational quality. With the report, the Education Office offers possible opportunities to improve education that are consistent with the institution’s educational vision. The educational quality report was presented to the education management team (EMT) on 28 June 2017, after which it was finalised. The final report was sent to the EMT, the vice rector for education and the dean, and has been added to the programme portfolio. The report forms an integral part of the strategic plan, which was submitted to the Board of Governors. The education quality report reflects quality characteristics derived from the quality assurance system and the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area.

The vision committee focuses on the programme’s educational vision or visionary aspect. The committee focuses on the programme’s academic level and the up-to-dateness of its content. The committee makes no judgement about the quality of the programme’s educational aspects.

The members of the vision committee engage in friendly but critical dialogue, based on a variety of perspectives, with the EMT and various programme stakeholders. At its meeting of 30 August 2017, the vision committee analysed the approach taken and the vision for the future of the programmes on the basis of the documents provided and a site visit. The committee held discussions with:

  • the EMT, which explained the current curriculum and a blueprint for curriculum reform and discussed the vision of reform and alignment with professional practice
  • alumni and representatives of the professional field, who were asked about the extent to which the programme meets the requirements of the professional field
  • students, who discussed their experiences in the programme. In this way, the committee was able to form a broad picture of the programme, its qualities and its challenges.

STRENGHTS

  • The vision committee is especially appreciative of the development that the Bachelor’s/Master’s degree programme in Transportation Sciences is undergoing and explicitly stresses that the programmes, with the changes that have been carried out and are planned, respond to the educational needs for the coming decades.
  • The programme has a strong focus on internationalisation. There is diversity in possible forms of outbound mobility, Dutch and English master’s tracks and a flexible study track involving distance learning. The programme leaves sufficient room within the curriculum for students to gain foreign experience (mobility window).
  • The students report that they are satisfied overall with the feasibility of this programme. The EMT continues to monitor this in view of the changes to the curriculum.
  • The EMT remains vigilant regarding the student intake to the master’s programme (including international students).
  • The committee has a favourable view of the evolving relationship between IMOB (the Institute for Mobility) and the programme.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • With regard to profiling, the committee has the impression that the distinction between the specialisations of Road Safety and Mobility Management is not very great, and that the difference in graduation profiles is unclear. In the outside world road safety is increasingly becoming an integral part of mobility management. The committee no longer regards these specialisations as distinct dimensions.
  • There is also an important challenge for the programme in positioning itself on the job market. The committee sees scope to attract more students in the bachelor’s programme and notes the importance of focusing on the programme’s strengths in its communication (optimal support, the ability to connect different disciplines, insight into holistic relationships within systems, etc.).
  • The programme is setting out its didactic concept in more detail and indicating how the education takes shape. Broad support for the didactic concept, including among guest lecturers, will facilitate the development of a policy on teaching methods and on evaluation.

On 16 and 23 January 2018, the strategy day for the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in transportation sciences took place. The vice rector for education, the dean of the faculty, the EMT’s chairs and vice chairs and members and staff members for education and from the Educational Development, Diversity and Innovation Office and the Quality Assurance Office took part in this day.

The educational analysis and the vision committee provided input for the strategic plan. The strategic plan was approved by the Board of Governors on 11 October 2018.

We inspire students through a unique, multidisciplinary, socially relevant programme

Smooth, safe and ecologically responsible transport is an important driver of economic and social development. The unique Transportation Sciences programme trains students to become transport experts who can proactively put forward solutions for social mobility needs at local and international level, based on a multidisciplinary approach.

  • The programme management is working on a clear profile for the master’s; there will be a strategic and an operational profile
  • The programme is pursuing its focus on internationalisation, in both the bachelor’s and the master’s.

For the development of the curriculum, the programme takes as its basis the latest scientific insights in the field of transport, while at the same time maintaining a sharp focus on the future needs of the employment market.

Due to the growing need for sustainable mobility solutions, the demand for mobility experts in the employment market is increasing all the time. The programme is taking initiatives to meet this increasing demand by inspiring more students to enter this fascinating field and constantly monitoring quality and alignment with the job market.

We are developing an effective body of personnel who reflects the multidisciplinary nature of today’s transport challenges

To be able to offer a high-quality multidisciplinary programme in Transportation Sciences, an effective body of personnel is needed in terms of both size and complementary expertise and experience. The programme management will make efforts to develop and implement a personnel plan to ensure this.
