Outbreaks, most dramatically illustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlight the impact that biologicals can have on society. Although we rarely encounter such extreme cases, the same principles for addressing biological risks are relevant for applications in life sciences and biotechnology. During this training, participants will identify specific risks that are presented by biologicals, how to assess them and how to select proper management techniques. This will be done against a background of legal requirements and resources that are relevant for conducting R&D in a state-of-the-art environment.

This course will be taught by Patrick Rudelsheim, PhD, General Partner of Perseus BVBA, a service company focused on biosafety and related regulatory requirements, which he founded in 2003.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will be able to...

  • identify biological material that may pose specific risks,
  • understand the difference between known hazards and uncertainty,
  • conduct a basic risk assessment,
  • identify protective measures and understand the need for proper use
  • appreciate that activities must comply with the relevant legal background
