Introduction to Aspen Plus

Aspen Plus is a process simulation tool used for process monitoring, optimization and conceptual design, especially by chemical process industries and energy conversion sectors. This workshop, by Dr Talieh Rajabloo (UHasselt), provides an introduction to the software.

Covered topics in this workshop are:

  • database definition (determining required feedstocks),
  • property methods, the importance and way to select,
  • building a flowsheet,
  • model the most basic unit operations of a chemical plant such as Pump, Heat exchangers, Heater, etc.,
  • defining process parameters,
  • generating pressure-composition, temperature composition, and viscosity-temperature curves, etc.,
  • running some process examples.

Learning outcomes

After having attended this workshop, participants will …

  • be able to define input-output products and process parameters which are essential step for simulation of chemical and petrochemical plants,
  • have insight in process simulation, unit operation, heat transfer processes, control basics, and analyzing thermodynamic behavior of processes.


An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:
