Mobility funding
Doctoral schools mobility call
Hasselt University encourages its junior researchers' international and intersectoral mobility and wants to promote (international) contacts between research groups.
Thanks to the Flemish Government's financial support, the doctoral schools of Hasselt University are able to award:
- International mobility grants to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for participation in:
- an international summer school,
- a short research stay abroad.
- Intersectoral mobility grants to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for participation in:
- an intersectoral summer schools
- research projects conducted at and in collaboration with non-academic institutions (companies, hospitals, …).
The second call for 2024 concerns the mobility period May - December 2024.
Deadline of submission is 10/03/2024 and the activity (summer school or research stay) needs to take place between 01/05/2024 and 31/12/2024. You will receive the result of your application by 25/03/2024.
All PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with a UHasselt supervisor can apply, and the proposals will be evaluated by the doctoral school council.
In total there will be three calls for mobility in 2024:
- call 1 has been launched in October 2023 for mobilities taking place from January 2024 onwards
- call 2 will be launched in January 2024 for mobilities taking place from May 2024 onwards
- call 3 will be launched in June 2024 for mobilities taking place from September 2024 onwards

Meet the jury seminars
Are you planning your doctoral defence in the near future? Does your jury consist of internationally renowned experts? Grab this opportunity to organize a lecture by one of your external jury members, open to PhD researchers from different research groups at UHasselt and other universities in Flanders.
- The jury member should be an excellent speaker with a solid reputation in his/her research field;
- The topic should be of interest to a sufficiently broad audience and can take several formats (e.g. public lecture, discussion seminar, master class, hands-on training,...);
- The lecture should be announced well in advance (preferably no later than three weeks prior to the event); in your own research group, within the broader UHasselt research community, as well as in the relevant research groups and doctoral schools at the other Flemish universities;
- Only travel expenses (flight -economy class- and train) will be reimbursed for a jury member from abroad for up to 500 euros (no accommodation costs);
- A maximum of one jury member per supervisor per year will be supported.
- Send your application, using the added form, to doctoralschools@uhasselt.be minimum 2 months prior to the planned date*;
- The doctoral school team will screen the applications. You will be informed within a month after submission of your application if it has been accepted or not.

* There is some flexibility regarding this deadline in cases where the exact date is still to be determined (or subject to change). Try to inform us as soon as possible. Nevertheless, proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the planned date in order to allow sufficient time for communication of the event.
Funding of bottom-up activities aimed at junior researchers
The Flemish government subsidizes the five Flemish universities to provide support and guidance of junior researchers. Specifically, the universities are asked to organize activities with respect to (1) training (discipline-specific, interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary), (2) career development, and (3) strengthening the international orientation of junior researchers. 35% of the budget needs to be spent in collaboration with at least two other Flemish universities.
In order to allow input from the various faculties, two calls for funding applications for activities aimed at junior researchers are distributed yearly.
The term ‘activities’ refers to workshops/courses (by internal and/or external teachers), symposiums, seminars, etc. There needs to be active involvement of junior researchers. Both local initiatives and initiatives in collaboration with other universities are eligible, but initiatives in collaboration with at least two other Flemish universities are relatively more likely to be funded. PhD students and postdocs may also apply for funding, on the condition that the application is supported by a professor.
The board of each of the three doctoral schools monitors the course offer for their own researchers. The university-wide doctoral school council takes the final decision with respect to the allocation of the budget.
