Assertive communication (Dutch)

This 2,5-day workshop, given by Dr Ilse Van Damme, is meant to extend your toolkit for assertive behaviour and to stimulate you to communicate in an efficient way. The focus will be on increasing insight and awareness, as well as on providing concrete tools which will be practised during the sessions and in-between. This workshop is in DUTCH.

The program looks as follows:

Day 1:

  • What is assertive communication?
  • The power of thoughts and beliefs
  • Observation vs. interpretation
  • Active listening

Day 2:

  • Saying no
  • Assertive communication techniques
  • ‘Weapons’ and how to respond to them
  • Giving and receiving feedback

Learning outcomes

After this workshop, you will be able to:

  • distinguish between sub-assertive, assertive and aggressive communication,
  • use active listening techniques,
  • evaluate situations in a more objective manner and become aware of how your interpretations and thoughts may influence your reaction,
  • recognize communication ‘weapons’ that might elicit sub-assertive behaviour,
  • use assertive communication techniques.

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

  • interpersonal competences:
    • assertiveness
    • oral communication
    • (interdisciplinary) collaboration
  • personal effectiveness:
    • self-confidence
    • self-development
    • stress management

What others say

The course was very meaningful, interesting and full of experience in any possible way. I was able to develop myself in a more assertive person, using techniques learned in this course. It helped me immediately after the first session and I am sure it will help me even more in the future.
(participant in 2020)
I gained a lot of confidence in difficult moments, knowing now how to communicate assertively and applying the skills I learned in the course. The insights I gained about myself, thanks to the practical approach of the course, help me develop as a person, both professionally and personally.
