Public Speaking (edition 2)

08 November 2022 - 22 November 2022
(2 x 8,50h)
campus Diepenbeek

This two-day workshop by Marc Van den Eede (WeGo’s) will provide you with general tools with respect to presenting and speaking for an audience. The focus is not limited to academic presentations; the workshop is relevant to all types of presentations. It comprises the following aspects:

  • how to build a story that fits with the expectations of my audience (audience based, whatever the target group, purpose and/or message might be),
  • how to improve my speaking skills and personal 'branding' leverage - how to make connection, how to speak in an inviting and guiding way, using amongst others the Q&A philosophy, vocal strengths, adoption time and word mirroring.

There will be two editions of this workshop in 2021.

Learning outcomes

After attending this workshop, you will have more knowledge about / awareness of:

  • how to increase your self-confidence as a speaker,
  • how to fragment and structure your presentation,
  • how to prepare and deliver a presentation in a shorter period,
  • how to synchronize visual support and (non-)verbal communication,
  • how to deal with non-appropriate words and wordings,
  • how to retranslate your story into a broader adoptable one,
  • how to connect and staying connected with your audience.

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

  • interpersonal competences:
    • presentation skills
    • persuasion
    • oral communication
    • assertiveness
  • personal effectiveness:
    • self-development
    • self-confidence

What others say

This training helped me to get structure in my presentation and provided me with many useful tips. The Q&A philosophy ensures structure and by incorporating FAQ or specific questions from your audience, you create a connection. Marc taught me how to tell a compelling story without slides. The individual advice on both verbal and non-verbal communication was also very informative. But especially the fact that we should try to enjoy it, despite the fact that we are nervous or stressed before we enter the floor.

The 'Public Speaking' training days are more than just receiving some tips and tricks about your speaking abilities. It is about your whole communication (verbal and non-verbal), it is about how you can make an impact on your audience and reduce your own stress levels in the meantime. It is about getting to know yourself and your personal communication skills.
