Fair Trade Week 2022

This year, the Fair Trade week runs from October 5th to October 15th. For its 16th edition, UHasselt would like to welcome you to a series of (free) events to get a taste of fair entrepreneurship and fair products! - Don't forget to check out the Repair Day and Manager@Breakfast activities below. We are proud to be cooperating with Stad Hasselt and PXL.

Tuesday October 11th

-> FREE lunch session  - Today's World - The Case of Bernardo Xol (Campus Diepenbeek - J30A - Wintertuin - 12.00 PM-1.00 PM) - in Dutch

Register here to be immersed in the case of Bernardo Xol, who was illegally emprisoned for 7 years due to defending the Cahabón river, holy for the Maya Q'echi' and essential for survival. This case will be presented by a filmed interview and a presentation in collaboration with 'Solidair met Guatemala' and Gemeente Herent. (Read more about the case here.) Wednesday October 12th

Register here to partake in this evening full of eye opening insights on the textile sector,  brought to you by Hasselt University, Stad Hasselt and Oxfam. Please note this lecture is in Dutch.

Programma:

• 6.30 PM -7.00 PM: Ontvangst in oude gevangenis
• 7.00 PM - 7.20 PM: Intro + circulaire bedrijfsmodellen voor de circulaire economie (prof. Tom Kuppens)
• 7.20 PM - 7.50 PM: Het verhaal van Patagonia + Q&A
• 7.50 PM - 8.30 PM: Interactief sofagesprek
• 8.30 PM - 10.00 PM: Fairtrade receptie

Dat de textielsector één van de meest vervuilde sectoren is, is al lang geen geheim meer. Deze bewustwording van de gevolgen van ‘fast fashion’ en schandalen rond slechte werkomstandigheden hebben ervoor gezorgd dat heel wat merken op zoek zijn gegaan naar duurzamere alternatieven. Zo groeide de populariteit van tweedehandsplatformen, kledingbibliotheken en herstelplaatsen voor kledij.

Tijdens deze inspiratieavond, georganiseerd door de UHasselt en stad Hasselt in het kader van de ‘International Repair Day’, bespreken we de toepassing van circulaire bedrijfsmodellen in de textielsector zowel vanuit een theoretisch standpunt als met concrete toepassingen. Onder meer het kledingmerk Patagonia komt langs om hun verhaal te vertellen. Zij kwamen onlangs nog in de media toen de eigenaar van het merk besloot zijn aandelen te schenken aan goede doelen. In het interactieve sofagesprek ontvangen we zowel lokale als internationale goede voorbeelden en vragen we hoe zij omgaan met de verschillende uitdagingen van de textielsector.

Aan ons publiek vragen we om deel te nemen aan de conversatie, maar ook om een kledingstuk mee te brengen dat een ‘repair’ kan gebruiken. Deze zullen dan in de loop van de avond worden hersteld door vrijwilligers van het Repair Café Textiel.

Achteraf volgt er een gratis receptie met een heerlijk Fair Trade drankje, aangeboden door de organisatie.
