Project R-1404

Title

Virtual Reality / Real Virtually (Research)

Abstract

This project addresses the need for technological R&D by the theater company CREW, a pioneer in technological theater, and this in preparation of upcoming performances ─O_Rex┌, ─E.U.X┌ and ─Porcile┌. More specifically, the project will focus on the development of three wide-area position and orientation tracking systems for on-stage use, that are easy to set up in a short time by theater technicians, that are sufficiently reliable for live performance, at the same time being affordable and scalable to tens of targets. During the last months of the project, an inexpensive interaction hardware device and software will be developed allowing audiences of tens or hundreds of persons to collectively interact in a performance. The artistic concepts to be explored concern the interaction of multiple position- and orientation-tracked head-mounted display equipped spectators in networked omni-directional video based performances, a 3D peephole display involving position- and orientation tracked robotized laptops, and the audience interaction with these.
