Discovery and exploration are the lifeblood of academic work: knowledge grows when our perspective shifts from detail to pattern, from measurement to insight, from a question to a new instrument. This happens across very different scales.

Microscopic specimens from the natural history flatworm collection shed light on major questions of biodiversity, as well as on the ways environmental pollution and regeneration are studied, with due attention to animal-friendly alternatives. At the same time, Tony Van Autenboer’s Antarctic fieldwork shows how science sometimes takes place quite literally at the edge of the world: using dog sleds and measuring instruments, researchers gathered data on rock formations, ice thickness, and magnetism. That same drive for systematic discovery lives on in the historic maps of Joseph Jean François de Ferraris, which captured the landscape of the Southern Netherlands with unprecedented precision. New heritage, too, belongs in this story: OSCAR-QUBE, developed through a student-driven process, moves beyond the laboratory and shows that exploration today can extend all the way into space. Together, these objects tell a single story: academic heritage is not a silent collection of old things, but a living archive of human curiosity - an invitation to look beyond what is already known.
